This course is an introduction to the politics of Latin America. The course centers on the following question: What are the challenges to democracy in Latin America and how do they prevent democratic consolidation? We will focus on four overarching themes: 1) authoritarian legacy 2) inequality 3) violence and 4) revolutions and social movements. -
Why are some countries rich and others poor? We will explore a wide range of possible reasons and explanations for why so many countries are poor within three frameworks: 1) Geography 2) the South and 3) the West.

The purpose of this course is to understand the process of revolution. We examine a number of different revolutions across time and space to understand the causes, tactics, and outcomes of revolution.

The primary objective of this course is to provide a framework for systematically and rigorously understanding current events in international relations. We examine state behavior in international security and in international political economy.

In this course, we seek to understand how and why foreign policy decisions are made. We explore explanations within three broad frameworks: 1) theoretical perspectives 2) historical perspectives and 3) domestic institutional perspectives.

The field of environmental policy seeks to understand the ways in which governmental and nongovernmental organizations make collective decisions that impact the environment. The course explores the following questions: 1) Why do environmental problems persist? 2) What are the competing interests and values in decision-making? 3) What are the policy tools and actors in the policy-making process?

The CU in DC Program offers students the opportunity to integrate theoretical concepts related to their major or minor fields of study with practical experience in an internship setting in Washington, DC. The purpose of the course is to allow students to explore the work of political, governmental, or non-governmental organizations, and the career possibilities that are available.

This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of the sociological analysis of human behavior. A global analysis is emphasized so that students understand social diversity and how society influences the lives of different groups and individuals.
